As Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen travels in the U.S., China warns of an escalation.
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen is having meetings in New York for two days before traveling to Guatemala and Belize. She is expected to be in Los Angeles on the last leg of that trip where she is scheduled to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, although the meeting has not been officially confirmed.
On Wednesday, China warned that it would take “resolute countermeasures” were that meeting to take place. The Chinese spokesperson said the United States should “refrain from arranging Tsai Ing-wen’s transit visit and even contact with American officials, and take concrete actions to fulfill its solemn commitment not to support Taiwan independence.”
The spokesperson said if the meeting takes place, “it will be another provocation that seriously violates the one-China principle, harms China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and destroys peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
Taiwan’s President Tsai said, “I want to tell the whole world democratic Taiwan will resolutely safeguard the values of freedom and democracy, and will continue to be a force for good in the world, continuing a cycle of goodness, strengthening the resilience of democracy in the world. External pressure will not obstruct our resolution to engage with the world.”
